David MacDonald, BDS, BSc(Hons.), LLB(Hons.), MSc, DDS(Edin.), FDSRCPS(Glasg), DDRRCR(UK), FRCD(C), has been promoted to the rank of professor with tenure, retroactively effective July 1, 2013, in the Department of Oral Biological & Medical Sciences.

Dr. MacDonald’s main research areas are systematic review in diagnostic radiology and Barrett’s oesophagus, radiological pathology of the face and jaws, scleroderma, and educational research in radiology and cone-beam computed tomography. The Barrett’s oesophagus review has been adopted by the National Health Service (NHS) in the UK. He was ‘Radiology Lead’ in the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Canada-wide study on scleroderma, the largest yet to date.
MacDonald’s principle teaching area is diagnostic radiology of the face and jaws, including cone-beam computed tomography, in the undergraduate and graduate curriculums. All his teaching is evidence-based and student-centred and is supported by his successful textbook Oral & Maxillofacial Radiology: A Diagnostic Approach* written especially for this purpose. The publisher has invited him to produce a second edition directed at dentists and at medical radiologists.
MacDonald is also the chair of Oral & Maxillofacial Radiology, a consultant at the BC Cancer Agency, and a UBC senator. He is the Dental Specialties representative to the Commission of Dental Accreditation (CDAC). In 2017 he was appointed Regional Director (North America) to his international specialty organisation the International Association of Dento-Maxillo-Facial Radiology (IADMFR).
