A recent Street Medicine Workshop introduced UBC students to the crucial practice of medical outreach and interprofessional collaboration when working with vulnerable individuals.
Hosted by the Health Student Caucus and led by Faculty of Dentistry Clinical Assistant Professor Carrie Krekoski, the event attracted students from medicine, pharmacy, nursing, dentistry, dental hygiene, and social work and provided a unique opportunity for everyone to learn together. Attendees gained hands-on experience in essential healthcare practices through a series of station-based activities.
UBC Dentistry led sessions highlighting the intricate links between oral health and systemic conditions, particularly in pregnancy and metabolic disorders. Faculty and students addressed questions about access to dental care and preventative measures, shedding light on the crucial role of oral health in overall well-being.
The workshop’s success underscored the importance of interprofessional collaboration in addressing the complex health and social care needs of people navigating poverty, chronic disease, mental health and substance misuse. By equipping future healthcare professionals with practical skills and knowledge, we can continue to foster compassionate, collaborative and effective care for vulnerable populations.
