STUDY CLUB: Clinically Applicable Oral Pathology with Dr. Charles Shuler

This study club will guide dental professionals to develop an approach to recognize and manage oral soft tissue changes that can be incorporated into their daily clinical practice. The group will examine case studies of oral soft and hard tissue lesions that have been seen in dental clinical settings. Each case will be reviewed with respect to the process of recognizing the tissue change and establishing the process for moving to a final diagnosis. Participants in the course will be encouraged to bring examples from their own private practices and all cases reviewed will have been initially identified in a general dental practice.

This course will focus on the etiology, transmission, oral manifestations and management of a HIV infected patient. Medical and dental considerations when performing procedures on a HIV infected dental patient will be discussed. Application of the principles of infection control in protection of the dental health care professional and the patient will be emphasized. Post-exposure prophylaxis of occupational injury while treating a HIV patient and currently available treatment will be discussed.

This course focuses on treatment concepts and modalities for medically complex patients particularly with hemodynamically unstable conditions like cardiac and valvular diseases, hematological disorders, patients on cancer therapy as well as uncontrolled diabetes and hypertension. Current available guidelines for dental treatment of such conditions in a safe environment reducing post operative complications will also be discussed. In addition, the focus on preventive modalities in general and particularly for such patients so that dental disease is prevented by adequate home care will be covered.

This hands-on course offers instruction in all aspects of adult minimal sedation to include nitrous oxide/oxygen inhalation and oral sedation, as well as effective methods in dealing with anxiety control in general practice. Participants will learn various techniques and will have the opportunity to try several types of nitrous oxide and oxygen delivery units. The three day course satisfies the requirements for state or provincial dental boards or colleges who require 21 hours of continuing education to certify for combined inhalation and oral adult minimal sedation. The two day course is designed to achieve certification in nitrous oxide/oxygen inhalation sedation, with 14 hours of continuing education.

In this Continuing Education course, practical tips will be discussed for managing common clinical scenarios in complex older adults, with a focus on skills that can be used in private practice. This three day course will provide you practical, up to date, and clinically relevant information in Geriatric Dentistry with two days of lectures at UBC and a half day observing clinical activity in a dental clinic, located at a long-term care facility in downtown Vancouver.

The course will include a lecture component (morning) and hands-on (afternoon). The morning lecture will focus on principles and step by step protocols for digital denture workflow for complete dentures. The hands-on component will include edentulous arch intraoral scanning and a review of the full digital denture workflow.

The course aims to teach the fundamentals of 3D modeling and progress to advanced applications, demonstrating how a solid understanding of the basics can be adapted to various clinical situations. Basic 3D elements covered include mesh density, group functions, clay modeling, and file output options. Advanced elements focus on dental
applications, such as customizing outputs from dental software. The primary teaching tool will be Meshmixer by Autodesk, Exocad, Blue Sky Plan 4 and Trios Unite.

This two day course is designed to teach dentists the procedure of lateral ridge augmentation via guided bone regeneration. Bone healing patterns, grafting materials & membranes, indications & management of complications, atraumatic extraction and socket preservation with bone grafting will be addressed in detail. Participants will attend didactic lectures on Saturday. Sunday’s session includes two interactive video presentations of surgeries by the course mentor(s) and hands-on surgery training, in simulation with animal mandibles.
