Susan Chow, DMD 1972, has worked as a dentist in Vancouver for over five decades. We connected with Dr. Chow to learn about her passion for dentistry and how UBC Dentistry helped shape her incredible career.
What inspired you to become a dentist?
My mom was a dentist in Taipei, Taiwan. Growing up, my strengths aligned well with dentistry, and I admired my mother wholeheartedly, so following in her footsteps felt like a natural fit. Not many women went into dentistry back then, but many of my mom’s friends were dentists, so they were positive role models for me.
Why did you choose UBC Dentistry?
UBC Dentistry was a new and very impressive school, so I wanted to come here. I had no connections to Canada, but my parents encouraged me to make the move. My uncle was kind enough to pick me up in Taiwan and travel with me to Vancouver to help me get set up.
The language barrier was hard for me at first, and I relied on watching and repeating what we were being taught during the first few months of classes. I also made many friends who helped me along the way, including Dr. Ilona Feher, one of the only other women in my cohort.
My parents visited me in November of my first year and met Dr. S. Wah Leung, who was the Dean at the time. Dr. Leung gave my parents a tour of the school and they loved it!
How did UBC Dentistry shape where you are today?
Always remember that your dental education is to serve the public. Dentistry isn’t just a career; it’s a way to help people.
I would also say dentistry isn’t about pursuing perfection. It’s about pursuing excellence. Always be open to learning and improving your skills.
What are some highlights from your career?
I’ve seen many of my patients grow up throughout my career. It’s strange when I have a patient who I’ve been seeing since they were a kid tell me they’re retiring!
Another highlight was being involved with organized dentistry, which allowed me to engage with the public and meet a lot of like-minded people who became my close friends. I also had the privilege of providing dental care to several UBC presidents, including Martha Piper, David Strangway, and Stephen Toope.
What activities are you enjoying in your spare time?
I used to play piano, and I’ve started taking piano lessons. I’ve also started cello lessons. I love to travel, play golf and cycle. I’ve done several cycling tours; my last one was in Prince Edward Island. Lately, I’ve been focused on my health and wellbeing and working hard at the gym with my personal trainer.
