In Memoriam
We are sad to share that James Chen, DMD 1975, passed away suddenly on June 25, at the age of 85.
Dr. Chen graduated from UBC Dentistry in 1975 and dedicated his 47-year career to perfecting his trade. His son, Henry Chen, shares a fond memory: “I recall him telling me that one patient said that he wouldn’t change dentists until my dad stopped practicing dentistry altogether. Another patient moved to Tsawwassen and still made the trek to Burnaby for dental appointments. My dad drew that kind of respect because he took so much pride in his work and always learned as much as he could about the dentistry trade.”
He was a devoted son who always honoured his parents and was a protective eldest brother who his family could always count on. His sons, David and Henry, were his most important priority in life, and he taught them the importance of helping family, friends and even strangers.
Dr. Chen was a positive force in many lives, and there are countless stories that speak of his good character, generosity, willingness to help others and stoic positivity. He will be missed by so many, and the memories of him will live on.
